Michelangelo Temmerman, native of Belgium, joined the NCCR Trade Regulation at its very beginning in 2005. Before this, he completed studies at both the universities of Ghent and Bern, where he graduated in law at a very young age and specialised in international and human rights law.
Within the NCCR first phase’s individual project 9 on biotechnology, he completed his PhD entitled ‘Property Rights to Animal Genetic Resources’ and was also involved in several research projects focusing on issues surrounding the patenting of biotechnological inventions.
In the second phase, he will be focusing on the legal notion of ‘abuse of patent rights’, on the need for ceiling provisions within the TRIPS Agreement, on (sui-generis) rights to animal genetic resources (together with Susette Biber-Klemm) and on a number of case studies on patent laws and its discontents (together with Jerzy Koopman).
