Gunter Stephan, born 1952 in Eberbach, Germany, studied Mathematics, Physics and Economics at the Universities of Heidelberg (Germany) and Stanford (USA). He graduated with a Master’s degree in Mathematics in 1976 and received a PhD in Economics in 1980 from the Alfred-Weber-Institute of the University of Heidelberg. Since 1988 Gunter Stephan is full Professor of Applied Microeconomics at the Department of Economics at the University of Bern. Currently he serves as Vice-Rector (Provost) of the University of Bern, is deputy director of the NCCR climate and member of the board of directors of the Oeschger Center of Climate Research (OCCR) at the University of Bern.
Gunter Stephan published more than 10 books and 60 papers in internationally reviewed journals covering a wide range of topics. His research includes capital theory, growth theory as well as environmental and resource economics. His work often employs a general equilibrium analytical framework that integrates the economy and the environment and links the activities of government, industry and households. Presently, he focuses his research and teaching activities on climate economics in general and on integrated assessment analysis of climate change as well as the interaction between climate policy and international trade in particular.
