Christian Häberli is a Senior Research Fellow at the WTI. He works and lectures on various trade, agriculture and development policy issues. His main research topic is food security from a trade and investment perspective. He graduated in 1977 with a Ph.D. on the subject of African Investment Law; he also obtained a degree in Development Sciences in Geneva (1975) and in Theology in Bern (2009). Professional career for the International Labour Organization (ILO) and for the Swiss Government with assignments in Madagascar, Thailand, Nepal, and Switzerland.

 

As a trade negotiator for Switzerland in the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) he participated in the Uruguay Round and in the Doha Round from 1986 to 2007. He chaired the WTO Committee on Agriculture (Regular Session); since 1996 and without interruption he has served in fifteen dispute settlement cases, including EC – Bananas, EC – Biotech, Japan – Apples, China – Trading Rights and United States – Country of Origin Labelling (COOL).
