Elisabeth Bürgi Bonanomi works at the Center for Development and Environment (CDE) of the University of Berne as a senior research scientist. There, she is also in charge of establishing inter-disciplinary research cooperation between the WTI and CDE.

Elisabeth Bürgi Bonanomi trained in trade law at the Institute of European and International Economic Law, University of Berne and the World Trade Institute, where she lectured on WTO law and contributed to various research projects, mainly in the field of trade in agriculture. She was in charge of the project “trade and human rights”, a joint research project of the World Trade Institute and the Georgetown University, Washington, USA (Thomas Cottier, Joost Pauwelyn, Elisabeth Bürgi, Human Rights and International Trade [Oxford : Oxford University Press, 2005]). Currently, she is finalising a comprehensive study on ‘the concept of sustainable development and its impact on the WTO Agreement on Agriculture’. In addition, she lectures and gives advice to stakeholders in the field. She also gets trained in international financial regulation.

Previously, she had practised as a lawyer in the public economy department of the Canton of Berne, where she was in charge of adjudication and legislation in the field of agriculture and environmental law. She had also trained in “international trade and human rights” at New College in Oxford, UK. Besides her law degree, she holds a bachelor's degree in history and Spanish literature and gained intercultural experience as an exchange student in Argentina. She gained practical experience of farming and the alpine economy during various working stays on farms. Elisabeth Bürgi is married and the mother of little Silvan and Luz.
