Call for Papers "Trade-And? The World Trade Organization’s Fuzzy Borders" Print
For the Conference "Trade-And? The World Trade Organization’s Fuzzy Borders"
5–6 February 2009, Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies
Geneva, Switzerland

The aim of the conference is to bring together scholars to investigate the effects legalization
has had on the boundaries with other regimes. We conjecture that this has been an uneven process. We think it is time (13 years after the creation of the WTO) to take stock and explore various legalization patterns and the conditions that affect the delineation of borders? What explains borders shifts over time and across issue areas? How do the existing rules of the WTO, their precision and interpretation, affect the politics at the borders? Thus, our main concern is to study how large the WTO’s alleged shadow is and to investigate the factors that explain the various impacts of an increasingly legalized system. In addition, we are interested in how other regimes/international organizations react to the intrusiveness of WTO and how actors navigate through an increasingly complex set of overlapping regimes.

We invite papers that address (but are not entirely limited to) the following questions:

  • Conceptual and/or empirical work on how to think about the effects of legalization on trade-and issues;

  • Interaction with other regimes/IGOs (in the areas of trade and the environment, culture, human rights, finance, competition, development, etc);

  • Interaction with norm-setting institutions in these areas/or private regulation (and its effects);

  • How does the WTO/GATT system itself deal with the pressure to take up new issues related to trade through negotiations or dispute settlement?

  • How do actors use different venues (including regional, bilateral or unilateral ones) to strategically pursue their specific interests in trade-and issues?

  • Is regionalism/bilateralism reinforcing or mitigating the alleged effects of legalization on trade-and issues

The conference is aimed to create a stimulating platform for debate among senior and junior scholars on the effects of legalization on the trade-and issues. We invite contributions using various theoretical approaches and methods. The conveners intend to publish selected papers from the conference in a special journal edition or edited volume. We have funding available to cover most of the travel and accommodation expenses. If you are interested in participating, please send an abstract of not exceeding 400 words to   by 31 August. Draft papers are expected in January 2009.
