European Parliament workshop on the UNESCO convention on cultural diversity

The European Parliament's Committe on Culture and Education organised a workshop on the implementation of the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity, where the previously tendered study and two briefing notes were presented.

3 years after the coming into force of the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity, the European Parliament's Committe on Culture and Education wanted to enquire about the current state of implementation and about the way forward. For this purpose, it opened a tender for a comprehensive study on the Convention's implementation and invited two experts to complement the study with more specific analyses of EU's implementing strategies in the internal and external affairs of the Community.

A2C's Mira Burri was invited for the former project and used the opportunity to not only critically look at the EU's position but also to introduce the ideas of A2C, which stress the importance of facilitating access to content in the digital media environment and suggested a few paths that the EU may want to follow in this context.

All reports were presented on 2 June 2010 at the Committee's meeting in Brussels. EP members, as well as representatives of the Commission, asked specific questions with regard to the concrete steps and measures that the EU could undertake to better implement the Convention.
