Book launch: International Trade Regulation and the Mitigation of Climate Change
The World Trade Institute will be holding a panel session at the Geneva Trade and Development Symposium (GTDS), which is being organised by the ICTSD in parallel with the WTO Ministerial Conference which will take place from 30 November to 2 December 2009.
The GTDS is similar in scope and objectives to the one ICTSD organized in Hong Kong during the 2005 WTO Ministerial (and also in Cancun in 2003), and consists mainly of a series of plenary and panel sessions that this year will focus on three main topics, namely, the strengthening of the multilateral trading system, the Doha negotiations and new issues and challenges for the future.
The Book “International Trade Regulation and the Mitigation of Climate Change” is a volume of The World Trade Forum Series edited by Thomas Cottier, Olga Nartova, Sadeq Z. Bigdeli, Cambridge University Press, 2009.
This collection of essays analyses options for climate change mitigation through the lens of the trade lawyer. By examining international law, and in particular the relevant WTO agreements, the authors address the areas of potential conflict between international trade law and international law on climate mitigation and, where possible, suggest ways to strengthen mutual supportiveness between the two regimes. They do so taking into account the drivers of human-induced climate change in energy markets and of consumption. Some of the contributors to the book will participate in the launch. The book launch will be chaired by Hannes Schloemann, Director of WTI Advisors and partner at MSBH Rechtsanwälte.
